and make its cultural diversity work for it. The city is where you find the most immigrants in the whole of Sweden with people of foreign background making up a whopping 48 to 50% of the population. Now, finding a place for everyone may be tricky, but the city is making progress in setting up activities and trainings that lead up to a job for most. As expected, when people come in from other countries, they try to fit in, learn the language, get a job, and become meaningful residents of Malmo. Though some get to their dream of establishing themselves in the long run, others are stuck in the rat race. Some have left their degree qualifications in the shelf to become taxi drivers, while others take to any job to take care of self and family. Malmostad Deputy Mayor on Labour and Social Affairs Mr. Sedat Arif in an earlier discussion with us had assured that the job is a continuous one. There is no place in the world where you come in as a fresher, and you find your dream job immediately. He gave instance of his wife who had to go through a long process to evaluate her own qualifications in order to use educational certificates obtained in her country of birth. He elaborated on steps aimed at creating opportunities for newcomers in the city as well as finding the right jobs for the differently qualified immigrants. In order to boost employment opportunities Malmo Kommun is implementing a comprehensive training program through its Workforce and Talent Development Department. The program aims to provide individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge required for new careers or to upgrade their existing skills. With a focus on digital literacy, the training covers various areas such as computer skills, programming, and data analysis. By equipping participants with these in-demand digital skills, the city hopes to prepare them for future job opportunities in the evolving digital landscape.by implementing robust anti-discrimination measures in an attempt to provide fair and equal opportunities for all residents. Amani Loubani is the city's Deputy Mayor on Democracy and Human Rights. Her efforts cannot go unnoticed either. Working hard in the fight against Afrophobia, Islamophobia in the current times is a harculean task, but surely one she is ready to undertake head on. She has promised to meet us again to elaborate on the steps she and her team are taking to make surethecity is safe for all. On her desk lies a lot, because this society is a modern one filled with people of foregn background, they must make it work, otherwise the whole country will stigmatise them with the usual stereotypes. Especially the type of rhetorics being used by the leader of the anti immigrant party Jimmie Åkesson whose popularity and party membership shot off the roof purely on the narative that immigrants are the problem. Sweden, is presently seeing an upsurge in crimes, and some politicians have pinned it solely on the increase in population of immigrants. But the statistics coming out from Malmo states the opposite. Crime is reducing in the city going by the Malmo statistics. Politics at national level has seemingly failed the immigrant population in Sweden, and this is why more pressure is on Malmo to work. If the city achieves success, it will be used as a perfect example of what immigrants can do, but if it fails, there are many politicians waiting to use their situation to further establish reasons why immigrants must leave Sweden. |
Inclusion is the way to go if Malmo wants to get it right. Malmostad needs to clean its own house by making sure the number of bosses under its employ reflects the population of the city. Of the number of people employed by Malmostad, only a paltry 18% are of foreign background, and that does not reflect the true diversity of the city. In order to truly touch the diverse ethnic groups, and multi-religious population meaningfully, one would think that the city needs to ask some critical question as to who is correct for the jobs. Only a muslim can penetrate through the muslim society, and muslims are mostly of foreign background. Same also applies for the other ethnic groups. They must bring in people who look like the city they govern, who truely understand the nuances in their different cultural, religious ways. 'How Far Can Malmo Municipality Go In Creating A Truly Multicultural And Equitable City'? Only time will tell. |
